Ray's journey began in Atlanta, where he cultivated a strong sense of family and a deep appreciation for hard work. He carried these values with him as he pursued his higher education at Virginia State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. This solid foundation served as the bedrock for his illustrious 30-year career as a structural engineer for the City of Colombia.
His tenure with the city was characterized by unwavering commitment to public safety and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Ray’s contributions to the structural integrity of numerous public projects were significant, leaving an indelible mark on the cityscape. His colleagues remember him not only for his technical expertise but also for his collaborative spirit, his mentorship, and his ability to solve complex problems with a calm and measured approach. His dedication earned him widespread respect and admiration throughout the community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ray was a man of immense character and charisma. His outgoing personality, quick wit, and generous nature endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Family was the cornerstone of Ray’s life. He was a devoted husband to Dianne Walker Mitchell, his partner in life and love. As a father to Anthony Mitchell, Jonathan Mitchell, and Leah Mitchell Hopkins, he instilled in them the importance of integrity, perseverance, and compassion. He also possessed a meticulous eye for detail, evident in his immaculate yard and his passion for vintage automobiles. His pride and joy was his meticulously restored 1966 Corvette, a testament to his patience, skill, and love for classic craftsmanship. He enjoyed attending vintage car shows, sharing his enthusiasm with fellow enthusiasts.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Walker Mitchell; his sons, Anthony Mitchell and Jonathan Mitchell; his daughter, Leah Mitchell Hopkins (and her spouse); and his cherished grandchildren, Carter, Mia, and Robert. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Mitchell Sr.; his mother, Josephine Lee Mitchell; and his sister, Cecilia Mitchell Martin.
A viewing to celebrate Ray’s life and share memories with his family will be held at Sonzini Mortuary in Colombia, South Carolina, on February 22, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on February 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at Sonzini Mortuary. Ray’s legacy, a tapestry woven with threads of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love, will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
