Kenneth Vernon, fondly known as "Kenny," left this world on February 10, 2024, at the age of 84, after passing peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on April 26, 1939, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Kenny's journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and an indelible spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Kenny was a dedicated professional who began his career in toxicology, working in hospitals where he provided essential care to patients. His quest for knowledge led him to earn a Bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Minnesota, followed by a doctorate in Toxicology at Montana State University. It was here that he not only thrived academically but also found a profound passion for fly fishing, joining the fly fishing club and forming lifelong friendships that enriched his life. He later transitioned to medical research, leaving an impactful legacy in his field.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kenny was a loving husband to Patricia Vernon, who he met in a botany class at the University of Minnesota. The spark was instant, igniting a lifelong romance filled with shared adventures, including hiking and running. Together they built a warm and welcoming home, where laughter filled the air thanks to Kenny’s generous spirit and penchant for sharing fun facts with everyone.
Kenny took immense pride in being a devoted father to Annie Vernon Ellingford, Lauren Vernon Moore, Todd Vernon, and Matthew Vernon. His greatest joy came from his role as a grandfather, as he taught his grandchildren the art of fly fishing and delighted in playing board games with them. Each year at the church Christmas party, he transformed into Santa, spreading joy and wonder to countless children, making memories that would last a lifetime.
Kenny was known for his warm personality and ability to make everyone around him laugh. He played the piano each evening for Patricia, creating a soundtrack to their beautiful life together. Among his proudest accomplishments were running a marathon at the age of 60 and catching every native species of fish in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho, celebratory feats that mirrored his adventurous spirit and love for the great outdoors.
Though Kenny is preceded in death by his father Eugene Vernon, his mother Eleanor Holden Vernon, and his brother Matthew Vernon Sr., he leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness carried on by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His warmth, generosity, and unyielding zest for life will be eternally cherished.
As we remember Kenny, we celebrate the incredible life he lived, the love he so freely gave, and the countless smiles he brought to those around him. He was a remarkable man who will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A viewing to celebrate Kenneth's life and share memories with his family will be held at Sonzini Mortuary in Billings, Montana, on February 22, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on February 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at Sonzini Mortuary. Kenny's legacy, a tapestry woven with threads of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love, will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those he touched, a beacon of light guiding them through life’s journey.
